    When Should You Summarize an Article?

    What is a Summary?

    A great summary is easy to read and explains all of the main points in the original. Important points to remember:

    • The main idea of the article is conveyed clearly and concisely
    • The summary is written in the unique style of the writer
    • The summary is much shorter than the original document
    • The summary explains all of the important notions and arguments
    • The summary condenses a lot of information into a small space

    How Do You Summarize an Article?

    Summarizing an article can be boiled down to three simple steps.

    1. Identify the main idea or topic.
    2. Identify important arguments.
    3. Write your summary.

    1. Identify the Main Idea or Topic

    The aim of an article is to convey a certain idea or topic through the use of exposition and logic.

    In a summary, you want to identify the main idea of the article and put this information into your own words. To do this, you must be willing to read the article several times. On the first reading, try to gain a general notion of what the article is trying to say. Once you’ve done this write down your initial impssion. This is most likely the thesis, or main idea, of the article. Also, be sure to include the author’s first and last name and the title of the article in your notation for later reference.

    Example: In the article “Why Two Best Friends Doesn’t Work,” author Cassandra Grimes argues that most teenage girls can’t get along in groups of more than two.

    When trying to identify the central idea, you should ask yourself, “Why was this essay written and published?” Clues to help determine this include the following.

    How to Identify the Main Idea of an Article

    1. Gather information from the title.
    2. Identify the place it was published, as this can help you determine the intended audience.
    3. Determine the date of publication.
    4. Determine the type of essay. (Is it expository, argumentative, literary, scholarly?)
    5. Take note of the tone of the piece.
    6. Identify certain notions or arguments that seem to be repeated throughout.

    Applying these methods of identification, let’s take a look at the article “Bypass Cure” by James Johnson. We can assume the subject of the article from the title. Upon further examination, it becomes clear that the author is arguing that new research suggests the best cure for diabetes is the surgical solution of a gastric bypass.

    Example: “Bypass Cure” by James Johnson records a recent discovery by researchers that people who have bypass surgery for weight control are also instantly cured of diabetes. Since rising diabetic rates and obesity has become a worldwide concern, the article provides a startling but controversial potential solution.

    Now that we have identified the main idea of the article, we can move onto the next step.

    2. Identify Important Arguments

    At this point in the pparation process, you should read the article again. This time, read more carefully. Look specifically for the supporting arguments. Some tips on how to identify the important arguments of an article are listed below.

    How to Identify Important Arguments in an Article

    1. Read on a paper copy or use a computer program that lets you make annotations.
    2. Underline the topic sentence of each paragraph. (If no one sentence tells the main concept, then write a summary of the main point in the margin.)
    3. Write that sentence in your own words on the side of the page or on another piece of paper.
    4. When you finish the article, read all the topic sentences you marked or wrote down.
    5. In your own words, rewrite those main ideas.
    6. Use complete sentences with good transition words.
    7. Be sure you don’t use the same words, phrases, or sentence structure as the original.
    8. You may find you need to leave out some of the unimportant details.
    9. Your summary should be as short and concise as possible.

    In short, you want to boil the article down to its main, supporting arguments. Let everything else fall away, and what you are left with is an argument or an opinion, and the arguments that support it.

    3. Write Your Summary

    Your summary should start with the author’s name and the title of the work. Here are several ways to do this correctly:

    Combine the thesis of the article with the title and author into your first sentence of the summary. Reference the following sentence as an example.

    In “Cats Don’t Dance,” John Wood explains that in spite of the fact that cats are popular pets who seem to like us, felines are not really good at any activities that require cooperation with someone else, whether that is dancing or sharing.

    If possible, your first sentence should summarize the article. The rest of your summary should cover some of the central concepts used to support the thesis. Be sure to restate these ideas in your own words, and to make your summary as short and concise as possible. Condense sentences and leave out unimportant details and examples. Stick to the important points.

    How to Quote the Author of an Article

    When you refer to the author for the first time, you always use their full name. When you refer to the author after that, you always use their last name. The following examples show how to use the author’s name in an article summary after you have already introduced them.

    You don’t need to use an author’s title (Dr., Professor, or Mr. and Mrs.), but it does help to add their credentials to show they are an authoritative source. The sentences below show ways to do this.

    In “Global Warming isn’t Real,” Steven Collins, a professor at the University of Michigan, claims that … New York Times critic Johann Bachman argues in “Global Warming is the Next Best Thing for the Earth” that …

    If you are discussing the ideas of the author, you always need to make it clear that you are reciting their ideas, not your own.

    How to Introduce the Ideas of the Author in an Article Summary

    • Use author tags
    • Use mentions of “the article” or “the text”
    • Add the page number that the information is found on in parenthesis at the end of the sentence

    Using Author Tags

    In writing your summary, you need to clearly state the name of the author and the name of the article, essay, book, or other source. The sentence below is a great example of how to do this.

    According to Mary Johnson in her essay, “Cats Make Good Pets,” the feline domestic companion is far superior to the canine one.

    You also need to continue to make it clear to the reader when you are talking about the author’s ideas. To do this, use “author tags,” which are either the last name of the author or a pronoun (he or she) to show you are still discussing that person’s ideas.

    How Long Is a Summary of an Article?

    The length of an article summary will depend on the length of the article you are writing about.

    If the article is long (say, 10-12 pages) then your summary should be about four pages. If the article is shorter, your summary should be about one to two pages. Sometimes, an article summary can be less than one page.

    The length of a summary will also depend on the instructions you have been given. If you are writing a summary for yourself, it’s up to you how long or short it will be (but remember, a summary is supposed to be a short regurgitation of the information outline in an article). If you are writing a summary for a class assignment, the length should be specified.

    The following paragraph is an example of a one-paragraph summary of an article.

    In “My Favorite Shoe,” Treyvon Jones explains that Nike shoes are the best brand of running shoe for serious track athletes. Jones supports this view by pointing out that Nike shoes are more comfortable, last longer, and provide more cushioning for the feet. He notes that the statistics from sales and scientific evidence of how Nike shoes are better for the feet support his claim. In addition, Jones points out that most professional runners use Nike and he tells his own story of how he won the 100-meter men’s competition after switching to Nike shoes.

    How to Edit and Revise Your Summary

    Before you are officially done, it is important to edit your work. The steps below explain the process of editing and revision.

    1. Re-read the summary and edit out any obvious mistakes.
    2. Read your summary aloud. If anything sounds off, fix it.
    3. Let one of your peers read your summary. Make changes according to their feedback.

    With that, your summary should be complete.

    1. According to Tom Castaway in “Taking Your Management to the Next Level,” effective management means clearly articulating your goals, supporting your employees and keeping the team on track.

    2. “Supporting Your Cat’s Needs” by Jane Yogurt is a humorous article that describes how a can manipulates their owner into providing them everything they want.

    Question: What is “skimming?”

    Answer: “Skimming” means that you don’t read every word. You look at the bold print in a chapter, the first sentences of each paragraph and look over a page to see if there are important points. Skimming is like doing an overview. Skimming is easy if you are reading in your own language and often we do skimming when we are looking at a newspaper, or scrolling down our social media posts. Basically, when you skim read, you are looking for the most interesting or most important things. When you find it, you might read a whole section, but you might also skip a lot that doesn’t seem important.

    Question: How do I write a summary? Should I use my own words?

    Answer: Your summary should reinforce the main point of the article, and should always be in your own words, just like the rest of your essay. However, a summary should not add your own opinion. The response is your opinion, and the summary is just a repetition of what is in the article.

    Question: How should I end a summary?

    1. In conclusion, the article clearly articulates all of the reasons a person needs to be careful not to let their car battery freeze in winter.

    2. To make sure the reader gets the point, the author concludes with a funny story of why she will never wave to a policemen at the side of the road again.

    3. Although she may belabor the point too much, Johnson does clearly and effectively explain many reasons why college students should take the time to recycle as much as they can.

    Question: How do I summarize a video?

    Answer: You would summarize a video in the same way that you would an article. In fact, I’d suggest that if possible you look at the video with captions on and take notes about the main points (stopping the video as you listen). Depending on how long the video is, you might want to watch the whole thing through once and then make notes about the main claim and supporting ideas. Then watch it through again and fill in some other details to help you do your summary. You would begin with a sentence like this:

    In the video “Walking a dog in the park” by Jordan James, the author contends that the most important thing to remember is that the walk is for the dog’s sake, not yours.

    Question: Do you need to add an in-text citation in the summary of an article?

    Answer: Generally, if you are just summarizing a single article and you have provided the name of the author and title of the article in the first sentence, you do not need to add any additional citations. However, be sure to follow your instructor’s directions. Sometimes, they may want you to provide page numbers (or even paragraph numbers) to show what you are summarizing.

    Question: How can I summarize a research article?

    Answer: An abstract is basically a summary of a research article. To write a good summary in your field of science, it would help to look up several research articles and look at their abstracts. Use that as a model for your own summary.

    Question: How do you begin an article summary when it has multiple authors?

    Answer: You would list all of the authors in the first mention of the article and afterwards refer to “the authors of the article” or just “the article.” Here is an example:

    Answer: There is a clear format for including the author tags in summaries. To start with, you need to include the title and full name of the author, usually in the first sentence of the summary. Here are some examples:

    James Joseph, in his article, “Remember When,” talks about his experiences in World War II.

    In his interesting retrospective article, “Remember When,” James Joseph retells his war experiences in World War II.

    Retelling his fascinating war experiences in World War II, James Joseph, in “Remember When,” gives the reader a glimpse into that period of history from the viewpoint of an eighteen-year-old soldier.

    Question: Our teacher told our group to write a discussion summarizing our assignment? What can I include?

    Answer: Summarizing means telling all of the most important points. Often, in English, the main ideas are in the first sentence of each paragraph, but sometimes they can be at the end or the middle. Occasionally, the author doesn’t actually say the main idea, but gives you a lot of details and lets you read them and decide on the main idea by yourself. Whatever type of writing you are summarizing, the basic way to do it is the same. You read the whole thing through and underline the parts which seem the most important. Then you think about the article and decide on the main point the author wanted you to understand after reading. I tell my students to think about what the author wants you to think, do or believe. Often, there will be a sentence in the article which says that main idea. That sentence is often in the beginning of the article. Write that sentence down and include the name of the article and the author. Then you need to read each paragraph and write down the main idea. A summary does not usually include all of the examples. It includes all of the main ideas. Putting those all together makes a summary.

    Question: What do I title my article summary?

    Answer: A simple title is just “Summary of “Article Title.”

    Question: What is the summary of the article?

    Answer: A summary tells all of the main ideas but doesn’t include the background details or evidence. Usually, a summary is much shorter than the original article, often a couple of paragraphs. In science, the summary is called an abstract.

    Question: Can I include a particular term that the author uses in the article while writing a summary?

    Answer: If the writer coins a term for something, you absolutely should use that term in your summary and explain that what the author means by that word. Similarly, if the author uses some specialized terms or vocabulary that is difficult to say in any other way, you should use the same words.     Answer: An abstract is another way of saying “summary.” However, an abstract is generally just one or two paragraphs. Often, the word “abstract” is used for a summary of a scientific article. Your abstract of the article should start with a sentence telling the main point of the article. Then it should have no more than ten other sentences telling other main ideas or reasons and evidence that support the first main idea. An abstract should have clear, easy-to-read sentences.

    Question: In a summary, should I create my own topic or use the article’s topic?

    Answer: Your summary should use the main idea of the article for your topic. The first sentence of the summary should include the author’s full name and the title of the article. Assuming that you are doing just a summary and not a response, you should keep your summary in the 3rd person.

    Here is a sample: Stephanie Arnold’s article, “How to Live With a Cat,” humorously describes her attempt to train her cat to be obedient.

    Question: How do you write the introduction of a summary?

    Answer: What kind of an introduction you do will depend on how long your paper is supposed to be. If you are just writing a summary, you will probably just start with a first sentence that tells the author, title and main idea. Then the rest of the first paragraph should give the basic overview of the main points of the article. Several examples of this are given above.     Answer: I assume you mean that you have an article which does not have an author. Generally, an article without an author is not a good source. However, some exceptions would be information from government websites or other authoritative sources which do not list the person who actually wrote down the article. In that case, you would introduce the article by telling where it was published and also possibly when.

    Question: How do I start a summary?

    Answer: The best way to start a summary is to say the name of the author and the title of the work and to give the main point of the article. Here are some examples:

    1. The complete guide to gardening not only annuals but also perennials and flowering bushes is “Texas Flowerbeds” by Neil Sperry.

    2. In “How to Get the Best Gas Mileage,” James Stevens explains the importance of car maintenance as well as driving tricks that can save on fuel use.

    3. “Organizing for Non-Experts” is Joan Causeways humorous instruction manual for helping messy people get a better handle on their stuff.

    Notice that even in these very short summary statements, you can use words like “humorous” to talk about tone. Moreover, you should also notice that you don’t have to start with the name of the author and title. That can be placed at the beginning, middle, or end of the sentence.

    Question: How should I write the ending of a summary?

    Answer: Conclude your summary with the main point of the article or if you are allowed to give your own opinion, you can say what you think of the article.

    Question: In an article summary, can I add my point of view?

    Answer: In summary, you need to just tell the view of the author. If you are also doing a response to the summary, that is where you tell your view of the issue and also your view about what the author wrote.

    Question: How do you write a summary of a research article?

    Answer: Often students are asked to write a short summary of the articles they use in a research paper. These are often fairly short, and are sometimes called an “annotated bibliography” or a “survey of sources.” To write that sort of summary, you will read the whole article through and then write only the main idea in a few sentences.     Question: When wiring a summary of an article, do I need to mention methodology in a summary? If yes how should it be mentioned?

    Answer: If you are writing a summary of a scientific research project, you do need to explain the methodology but not in detail. You would mention the type of methodology used and any key terms that would let a person in that field understand how that science project was either conducted or analyzed.

    Question: Can I put a hypothesis in the summary of the article to support the main idea?

    Answer: Generally, a “hypothesis” is giving what you think about something. A summary of the article is not supposed to have your own opinion.

    Question: Can a summary report be bulleted?

    Answer: In a business or science report, you can use bullets in a summary; however, in most academic subjects, it would not be appropriate. If you are in doubt, you should probably contact the person who gave you this assignment and ask whether or not they would like you to use bullets.

    Question: How can I summarize a news article?

    Answer: Traditionally, a news article tells the basic facts and answers who, what, when, where, how and sometimes why. You can summarize by using those categories.

    Question: Which tense do we have to use in a summery on an article written in simple past about a past event? Should we use the psent perfect to summarize the events?

    Answer: There is more than one way to write this sort of summary. The most important thing is to be consistent in the verb tense you use. All articles are written in the past and are published before you are summarizing them. Generally, I would follow this format:

    In the article written by John Jacobs about cats ruling the world, he states that “Cats make better leaders than men.” However, in his conclusion, he stated that he would never want to live in that world.

    Question: Are examples completely forbidden in summaries?

    Answer: It is appropriate to include a brief mention of an example in the summary but most of what you are writing should be the main point of the author.

    Question: Is skimming bad when you’re summarizing an article?

    Answer: I would always suggest that you start by skimming the article to get the main ideas; however, you probably need to read the article closely at least once in order to make sure you haven’t missed a major point.

    Answer: In the second paragraph, you will give a summary of the main reasons for the author’s thesis. You may also briefly explain the evidence the author uses to support those reasons.

    Hi Riggzie! So glad you have decided to go to college! I think that when you are older in college, you really appciate it more than when you’ve just graduated from high school. Essays from older students are always more interesting because they’ve had time to see things from more than one perspective and/or have more interesting experiences to write about. As far as your question, I always need to remind people to follow the instructions of your teacher first. Different textbooks and teachers will give different instructions based on what they are trying to do in that assignment. However, generally a summary does not have an opening or conclusion; however, if you are writing a summary, analysis, response (which often is an assignment after the summary), you will be putting in some of those other elements.     Thank you very much. I am 47 and decided to go to college. I guess better late than never! I have been searching the web for summaries and I think you have helped me a lot. I was told by my family (wife has 2 associates and a bachelors, and my oldest is 20 and in college) that I should still do the opening paragraph, the content paragraph and a conclusion paragraph, but what you have listed is clearly not the case. I take English Composition in my next semester, so I have to do run before I walk.

    Hi Ashi! You have asked a good question. There are two ways to cite more than one author. One is simply to list all of the authors when you first mention the article title and authors. The other way is to cite the first author and then add “et al.” which means “and others.” After that first citation, you should probably use “in the article,” or “the authors point out” rather than trying to use the name of the author, although you can say “Baker et al. suggest” but that sounds a bit formal, and I have never used that format personally. Here is a sample to help you:

    In “COVID-19 Responses” by Jim Barker, Jose Hererra, and Ysinda Gomez, the authors argue that inpidual responsibility and government action needs to be considered together when evaluating the pandemic. The article also suggests… Furthermore, the authors conclude…

    Generally, references should be to where you found the article if it is a book or other published source such as a journal or magazine. If it is a search engine like Gale that compiles different magazine articles, you would use the “cited in” format.

    Hi Sandi, you don’t tell me what age your son is, but that type of assignment is ptty straightforward for High School. There are two ways to do a compare and contrast between passages. One way is to separate it into two sections: how the responses are similar; how the responses are different. A different and generally more difficult (but potentially better essay) is to do talk about the passages topically and inside each topic explain what is same and different. For example, topics could be: choices, responses, outcomes, character, tone of author, relevance to modern life etc.

It is writing an essay on comparing 2 different stories, on the basis of “How we make decisions when faced with difficult choices?” The 2 stories are titled, “The Lady or the Tiger” by Frank Stockton and “The Choices of Hercules” by James Baldwin. His instructions are to read both passages and write an essay in which compare Hercules’ and the princess’s responses to the choices they are given. He needs to support his discussion with evidence from the text. What do you suggest on how I go about explaining how to compare the two texts in one essay?

    Hi James, my German is a bit rusty but I did a bit of searching for the answer and I think the problem is that English Present Perfect and German Perfekt are not quite the same. In both English and German, we can refer to past events using a simple past and the psent perfect; however, the German Perfekt is somehwat different than the English perfect in that the engish “We have eaten” means it began in the past and is now completed, while the German “Wir haben…gegessen” is usually used to speak about a completed action.

    My guess is your student’s English teacher did not know the difference.

    When I encounter these sorts of issues with students, I usually tell them that what I am trying to teach them is “standard English practice” which means that it is not just about rules but about how native speakers actually talk. No native speaker is going to talk about a historical situation in the psent tense (even if there might be an obscure rule that would allow that). If he does that, he will be regarded as having incorrect verb tenses, or else confuse the listener. However, I will usually not grade a person down in this sort of situation.     Hello, I am a native English speaker and teach ESL in Germany. Recently, I had one of my students write a summary of a historical event that I verbally had recounted. The purpose of the exercise was to test his listening comphension. The story itself concerned a Saxon knight named Konrad von Wettin who lived in the 12th century. The student proceeded to write a very nice summary which demonstrated his excellent listening skills. The problem was that he wrote the summary in the psent tense. For example, “Konrad is a knight living in the 12th century.” “He has a wife named Liutigard and twelve children.” He continued on in this fashion throughout the summary. In response, I corrected his grammar by putting every sentence, when appropriate, into the past tense. For example, “Konrad was a Saxon knight who lived during the 12th century.”

    To my surprise, he argued the corrections and stated that his German high school English teacher told the class to write summaries only in the psent tense. My student went further to claim that if he had turned in a summary written in the past tense that he would have received a poor grade.

    You should keep the same name of items in the summary article that cannot be easily changed to a synonym. However, you should not keep the same structure of sentences. Actually, in a summary your sentences will only tell the broader picture not the details. Therefore, your sentences should not match the original.

    Cyrille, the last sentence depends on whether your job is just to write a summary or whether you are also supposed to respond with what you thought about the article. If you are supposed to respond, then the last sentence should tell whether you were convinced by the article. If you are just summarizing, then the last sentence should say what the author wants to convince the audience to do, say, think, or believe.

    Hi Bethany, I think that you are quite correct except that the response would not be personal. Instead, your response would be an outline of how you would teach that topic. I think I would try to clarify with the person who gave you this assignment whether they want an outline or a narrative (paragraph form) of writing. I think that summarizing the article as a beginning would be helpful, especially if you are going to teach this information. I don’t have information about developing curriculum, but I do have some articles about outlining an explaining article, which is what this probably would be like.

Sometimes you summarize the whole article and then tell what you think. Other times, you might just summarize smaller parts of the essay and mix it with what you think.     Writing a SUMMARY of an article

    The purpose of a summary is to give the reader a clear, objective picture of the original text. Most importantly, the summary restates only the main points of a text or a lecture without giving examples or details, such as dates, numbers or statistics.

    Guidelines for writing a summary of an article:

    * State the main ideas of the article.

    * Identify the most important details that support the main ideas.

    * Write your summary in your own words; avoid copying phrases and sentences from the article unless they’re direct quotations.

    * Expss the underlying meaning of the article, not just the superficial details.

    * Your summary should be about one third of the length of the original article.

    Your summary should include:

    Introduction

    * Start with a summary or overview of the article which includes the author’s name and the title of the article.

    * Finish with a thesis statement that states the main idea of the article.

    Body Paragraphs

    * The number of paragraphs in your summary depends on the length of the original article.

    * Your summary should be about one third the length of the original article. For a one-paragraph summary, discuss each supporting point in a separate sentence. Give 1-2 explanations for each supporting point. For a multi-paragraph summary, discuss each supporting point in a separate paragraph.

    * Start each body paragraph with a topic sentence.

    * Each paragraph focuses on a separate main idea and just the most important details from the article.

    * Put the ideas from the essay into your own words. Avoid copying phrases and sentences from the article.

    * Use transitional words and phrases to connect ideas.

    Concluding Paragraph

    * Summarize the main idea and the underlying meaning of the article.

    Sinh viên thành thạo trong việc viết essay hiểu rằng việc tóm tắt, xác định những gì quan trọng nhất là một trong những công cụ quan trọng để thành công ở trường đại học.

    Bạn cần hiểu rằng nếu bạn có thể viết một bản tóm tắt một hoặc hai câu cho mỗi đoạn sau khi đọc nó, thì đó là một dấu hiệu tốt cho thấy bạn đã hiểu đúng về nó. Nếu như bạn không thể tóm tắt ý chính của đoạn văn, bạn cần sử dụng phải thay đổi và tìm cách.

    Định dạng của Summary cho bài Essay:

    • Khi viết một bản tóm tắt, hãy nhớ rằng nó phải ở dạng đoạn văn.
    • Một bản tóm tắt bắt đầu bằng một câu giới thiệu nêu rõ tiêu đề văn bản, tác giả và ý chính của văn bản
    • Một bản tóm tắt được viết bằng lời của bạn.
    • Một bản tóm tắt chỉ chứa các ý tưởng của văn bản gốc. Không chèn bất kỳ ý kiến, giải thích, suy luận hoặc nhận xét của riêng bạn vào.
    • Xác định theo thứ tự các yêu cầu phụ quan trọng mà tác giả sử dụng để bảo vệ luận điểm chính.
    • Sao chép từng đoạn ba từ riêng biệt từ bài luận mà bạn nghĩ hỗ trợ và / hoặc bảo vệ ý chính của bài luận.
    • Trích dẫn từng đoạn văn để báo hiệu về tác phẩm và tác giả bằng cách đặt dấu ngoặc kép xung quanh đoạn văn bạn đã chọn và đặt số đoạn văn có thể tìm thấy đoạn văn ngay sau đoạn văn.
    • Sử dụng tài liệu nguồn từ bài luận rất quan trọng. Tại sao? Bởi vì bảo vệ khiếu nại với tài liệu nguồn là những gì bạn sẽ được yêu cầu làm khi viết bài cho các giáo sư đại học của bạn.

  • Executive Summary là “trích đoạn” của một bài assignment hay report dài. Đây là nội dung mà giáo viên hướng dẫn của bạn sẽ xem trước khi đọc toàn bộ bài tập của bạn. Nếu bạn biết cách viết Executive Summary rõ ràng và súc tích, bạn sẽ dễ dàng tạo được ấn tượng đối với giáo viên của bạn và đạt được điểm cao.

    1. Format của Executive Summary

    Mục đích chính của Executive Summary là cung cấp cho người đọc hiểu ngay về bài assignment của bạn. Vì vậy, nó nên ngắn và đúng trọng tâm. Nói chung, một bản tóm tắt không dài quá một trang. Format của Executive Summary cho một bài assignment bao gồm các phần sau:

    • Phương pháp và phân tích – phương pháp nào bạn đã áp dụng và bạn đã phân tích những gì
    • Kết quả – kết quả của bạn hoặc bất kỳ kết quả dữ liệu nào?

    2. Đặc điểm của một mẫu Executive Summary tốt

    – Executive Summary khác với Abstract. Nhiều sinh viên coi cả hai giống nhau. Nhưng Abstract không bao gồm thông tin đầy đủ về bài assignment. Nó ngắn hơn nhiều so với Executive Summary.

    – Executive Summary nên được viết sau khi bạn hoàn thành bài assignment của mình. Thông thường, sinh viên có xu hướng viết tóm tắt trước. Một khi bạn đã hoàn thành bài assignment, bạn cần biết tất cả các điểm chính được đề cập trong đó. Chính vì thế, viết Executive Summary sau đó sẽ dễ dàng hơn cho bạn rất nhiều.

    – Chỉnh sửa và rà soát lỗi chính tả. Hãy đọc đi đọc lại Executive Summary ít nhất 2 lần. Bạn cũng có thể nhờ một ai đó giúp mình xem lại và phát hiện lỗi giúp mình.

    – Hãy tuân theo các định dạng của Executive Summary chính xác. Đừng bỏ sót bất cứ điều gì mà giáo viên hướng dẫn của bạn đã yêu cầu nếu bạn không muốn mất điểm.

    – Hãy chắc chắn rằng không có vấn đề đạo văn trong Executive Summary. Bạn phải viết tóm tắt hoàn toàn bằng vốn từ của riêng bạn.

    – Xác định bài báo

    Bắt đầu Article Review của bạn bằng cách đề cập đến tiêu đề và tác giả của bài báo, tên tạp chí và năm xuất bản trong đoạn đầu tiên.

    Ví dụ: Bài báo: “Condom use will increase the spad of AIDS” được viết bởi Anthony Zimmerman, một linh mục Công giáo.

    – Viết lời giới thiệu: 

    Không nên: phát biểu ở ngôi thứ nhất (“Tôi”).

    How to Write an Article for FCE Writing Part 2

    An article is a very common type of text nowadays. We can find all kinds of articles in newspapers, magazines, blogs, etc. For this reason, in order to know how to write an article for FCE, we must bear in mind who will be reading our article. This, as we will see later on, we will find out from the instructions the FCE Writing paper provides us with. But before we move on to that, let’s take a look at the characteristics of an article for FCE Writing Part 2:

    FCE Writing Article Example

    Now that we are familiar with the characteristics of an article, the best weay to know how to write an article for FCE Writing is to take a look at an example of an article at First-B2 level. So let’s see an example of a task and a sample answer to that very same task.

    Instructions of an Article for the FCE Writing Paper

    It is extremely important to read the instructions carefully, as you are supposed to obtain all the information you need to write the article. In this case we can see the following:

    • Where our article will be published: a local magazine
    • Topic: their favourite things about the Internet
    • Main ideas: things you do with the internet, recommend a website

    And that’s exactly how we will organise our article, knowing exactly what to talk about in each paragraph.

    Now that we have an example of an article task for FCE, let’s take a look at a sample article which answers the task above. Pay attention to the language as well as to the structure marked in red.

    If we take a close look at this sample article for FCE, we can see the following features:

    • The introduction psents the topic in a general way, but making clear what article is about: the Internet.
    • The second paragraph talks about why I like the Internet and one of the things that I like about it.
    • The third paragraph makes a recommendation of a website, explaining why I like it so much.
    • The conclusion is a summary of sorts and asks the reader for some feedback on their own pferences regarding the use of the Internet.
  • The language is informal:
    • Phrasal verbs: put you up, check out.
    • Contractions: Isn’t that fantastic?
    • Colloquial phrases: one of the cool things, I totally recommend it, etc. 
    • We address the reader directly: What about you? 
    • Exclamation marks: …find the answer! 
  • In this example of article for FCE Writing we can appciate many of the typical characteristics of this type of activity. However, bear in mind that I have tried to simulate a strong B2 level without necessarily reaching C1.

    Frequently Asked Questions: What if I write more than 190 words?

    As I already explained in pvious posts, Cambridge Assessment English does not count how many words you’ve written in order to penalise you. But remember the following: if you have written a lot more words than necessary, you have probably included irrelevant information. In the same way, if you write less than 140, you are probably lacking essential information. For this reason, I always recommend writing only 10 or 20 words over the limit. In this way, we make sure we don’t lose points for something so silly.

  • An executive summary is a brief introduction and summary of your business plan. It should describe your business, the problem that it solves, your target market, and financial highlights.

    A good executive summary grabs your reader’s attention and lets them know what it is you do and why they should read the rest of your business plan or proposal. It’s not unusual for investors to make an initial decision just based on reading an executive summary, so it’s important to get it right. We’ll show you how to write an executive summary that sets your business plan apart from the rest.

    Is an executive summary necessary?

    Are you writing a business plan to show to investors or bankers? Then you need a good executive summary. Many people will read only the summary, no matter what. Others will read the summary first to decide whether or not they read the rest of the plan. The executive summary is essential in plans that are being written for outsiders.

    Now if you’re writing a business plan solely for internal use you may not need to write out an executive summary. However, there are some internal plans –such as an annual operations plan or a strategic plan -that can use a summary to highlight necessary information and showcase a digestible version of the overall plan.

    It takes some effort to do a good summary, so if you don’t have a business use for the summary, don’t do it.

    How long should an executive summary be?

    The general rule of thumb is that executive summaries should be as short as possible. Your audience has limited time and attention and they want to get the details of your business plan as quickly as possible.

    Try to keep your executive summary under 2 pages if possible, although it can be longer if absolutely necessary.

    1. A description of your product or service and the problem your business solves

    Include a brief description of the product or service you offer and why it’s necessary. Your business doesn’t need to serve a larger social problem, but it should address a need for customers or an opportunity in the market.

    2. A description of your target market

    4. Financial Overview

    If you’re an existing company, this might be as simple as highlighting recent annual sales and growth over the last year. For a startup, it might be a brief description of aspirations, such as a sales forecast goal for the next year or three years from now. I often recommend a simple highlights chart, a bar chart with sales and gross margin for the next three years.

    5. Your Team

    This is especially important for startup companies. Investors want to know who is behind the business idea and why you and your team are the right people to build the business. It also may be valuable to highlight any gaps in your team and how you intend to fill them. If you have potential partners or candidates in mind, briefly mention them and expand on their qualifications within your full business plan.

    6. Funding Needs

    If you are using your business plan to raise money for your business, your executive summary should highlight how much money you are looking for. Investors will want to know this upfront and not have to dig through a business plan to find this detail.

    Other topics your executive summary may need to cover

    Evidence of early success

    If you are a young startup and you’re writing a business plan to raise money, you will want to include evidence of “traction” in your executive summary. This can include results from consumer surveys, p-order numbers for your product/service or even early sales numbers if you did a soft open or limited time release. It doesn’t have to be much, but any early success provides proof that your business model, product/service and market research are well-founded.

    Future Milestones

    You may also want to discuss future milestones that your business hopes to achieve. This is particularly important for businesses within a highly saturated or complex industry, such as medical device manufacturers and drug companies, for example. They need to explain where they are in the process of getting regulatory approvals and what steps remain.

    Evidence of Financial Stability

    If you’re seeking a bank loan, bankers will be looking for evidence of your financial stability, including your net worth, assets, and financial history. Read on for tips on writing an executive summary for each of those scenarios.

    Tips for writing an executive summary for investors

    Before you develop your executive summary for seeking investment, understand how it fits into your business plan. The executive summary can be the first section of your business plan, or you might be developing a stand-alone executive summary that you plan on handing out without the rest of the plan.

    My views on this are taken from eight years as an active member in an angel investment group, and more than 10 actual angel investments, plus membership in the Angel Capital Association.

    Investors use executive summaries to screen opportunities

    A well-ppared executive summary is useful for angel investment platforms like Gust, AngelList, and others to gauge interest in candidates. Introductions lead to requests for email summaries, not full business plans, so you’ll want to have an executive summary ready to go that causes investors to want to see the full thing.

    Investors need the full business plan to complete due diligence when reviewing candidates

    We’ve never invested in a business that didn’t have a business plan and your executive summary is the key to having your business plan reviewed. The full reading of the complete business plan comes only later in the process after we’ve screened summaries down to a very few that are interesting enough to do due diligence.

    Of the group I work with, for example, three-fourths of us will read every executive summary submitted to us. All of us will read summaries for plans that pique group interest, and half of us will look at the rest of the plan only if we are still interested after reading the summary.

    Mention pvious startup experience, or specific industry expertise

    Let the investors know about any pvious startup experience or specializations from the start because this makes a huge difference. Investors often say “bet on the jockey, not just the horse.” Keep it brief, just a reference to more information to come later, but make sure you’re able to back up your claims later on.

    Outline how much money you intend to raise and how it will be spent

    It’s a summary, so details will come later, but investors want to know quickly whether your startup is in their normal range of interest and the use of funds makes a difference, too. Spending to build inventory for existing orders, for example, is way less risky than spending to develop a product that is in design and prototyping.

    Valuation, in this context, is controversial. Valuation is what you say your company is worth, a number that determines how much ownership you give away for investment. Some investors want summaries to specify how much money at what valuation; others want to assign the valuation themselves and don’t like startups pushing their number too early.

    Mention your exit strategy

    Be persuasive, but focus on the facts

    You want to make your prospective investor want to keep reading; convince them to invest in your startup. But do understand that the persuasion is in the facts, not in the wording. What keeps them interested is the content of the summary, not the tone. Facts that prove traction, potential market, or startup experience are infinitely more powerful than mere assertions of excellence.

    Avoid obvious clichés

    There are severely obvious pitfalls that you can fall into if you’re not careful. For example, never mention the team’s passion or commitment-they all have that, so it’s irrelevant. If you say that your startup is disruptive, or game-changing, or the next Facebook or whatever, you lose. Instead, show that with facts and let the investors say it, not you.

    Tips for writing an executive summary for a bank loan

    Contrary to the common misconception, bankers don’t ever take risks on business plans. To get bankers to read on, the executive summary has to cover the six main points suggested in the beginning of this article, plus a few selected other points that highlight stability, assets on the balance sheet, and financial history, showing that the loan is not risky. With one notable exception, banking law forbids banks lending money to businesses that don’t have enough assets to cover the full value of the loan, and then some. That’s against banking regulations.

    Good professional bankers ask for a business plan as part of a loan application because they legitimately want to know and understand your business, but they don’t take risks. This summary isn’t about persuading or selling, but rather reassuring and describing.

    So what works for the executive summary for bankers is quite different from what works for the summary for investors.

    Outline your personal net worth

    Where investors want to see management team startup experience, bankers want to see the personal net worth of business owners. The more collateral, savings or other investment you have available, the more likely you are to secure the loan.

    Be transparent about your financial history and bankable assets

    Where investors want to see future potential growth, bankers want to see past financial history and bankable assets. Try to have every piece of financial information about yourself, current investors and any past businesses available upfront.

    Give evidence of your potential stability and longevity

    Where investors want to look at possible exits, bankers want their commercial borrowers to offer future stability. You don’t need to have exact numbers, but developing a financial forecast that defines growth, future cash flow, costs and sales over the next 1-3 years can serve as evidence for stability.

    Risk exception for bank loans

    I mentioned one notable exception to the rule that bankers don’t take risks. In the U.S., the federal Small Business Administration (SBA) has programs that work with local business banks to guarantee some of the riskier small business loans to make borrowed money available to startups and small businesses.

    Like traditional bank loans, SBA loans require a solid traditional business plan that includes a good executive summary covering the five main points suggested in the first list above. It will still benefit you to have the financial stability elements laid out as you would for a bank, but the limitations may be less strict and provide more room for riskier businesses to gain funding.

    6 Tips for writing an effective executive summary

    No matter why you’re writing your executive summary, there are some general rules of thumb that make it easier, and ultimately more effective. Here are a few to keep in mind as you get started:

    1. Think of an executive summary as a pitch

    Of course, you’ll highlight what will most spark the reader’s interest, to achieve this plan’s immediate business objective. But your readers expect the key points covered. It’s a summary, not just a pitch.

    2. Write it last

    Don’t start writing your business plan with your summary. Even though the executive summary is at the beginning of a finished business plan, many experienced entrepneurs (including me) choose to write the executive summary after they’ve written everything else.

    Ideally, the executive summary is short-usually just a page or two, five at the outside-and highlights the points you’ve made elsewhere in your business plan, so if you save it for the end, it will be quick and easy.

    3. Keep your executive summary short

    Be brief and concise. I know experts who recommend a single page, just a page or two, no more than five, and sometimes even longer. I say less is more. Keep it as short as you can without missing any essentials. And-I can’t resist, because I read hundreds of plans every year-one page is better than two, and two is better than five, and longer than five pages (my opinion here) is too long.

    4. Keep it simple

    Form follows function , so don’t over complicate or over-explain things in your summary. Most executive summaries are short texts, often with bullets, broken into subheadings. Illustrations such as a picture of a product, or a bar chart showing financial highlights, are usually a welcome addition.

    5. Prioritize sections based on importance and strengths

    Don’t bury the lead. Organize your executive summary so that the most important information appears first. There is no set order of appearance of the different key items included, quite the contrary, in fact- so use the order to show emphasis.

    Lead with what you want to get the most attention, and follow with items in the order of importance. I tend to like summaries that start with stating a problem because that can add drama and urgency that tees up the solution in your business.

    6. Use it for your summary memo

    When it’s finished, repurpose it as a summary memo. It’s the first chapter of a formal plan, but you can also use it as a stand-alone “summary memo.” Investors often ask startups to send a summary memo instead of a full business plan.

    WHAT IS AN ARTICLE?

    An article is a text that expsses your opinion and knowledge about something. It should be an entertaining text that gets the readers attention and informs them.

    THE STRUCTURE OF AN ARTICLE IS SIMPLE:

    WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?

    The 2021 version of the B1 Preliminary involves writing two texts of 100 words. You need to write an email, and then either an article or a stroy. You have the choice between the two, do not write both of them. For more information on how to write an article, see this post.

    The examiners are looking at the following criteria:

    All of the content in the writing should be aimed at answering the question. It should be easy to understand and also take into account who is reading it. E.g. if it is a letter to a friends, it must be informal and familiar.

    The organisation aspect of the evaluation refers to how clearly you psent your ideas. If it is a letter, it must resemble a letter. You need to do it with paragraphs, the paragraphs must not be too short and they need to be set into separate topics. If you write a story it can be all in one paragraph but it needs to include a beginning, middle and end.

    This part of the assessment focuses on the use of vocabulary and grammar. You need to show flexibility in their use and also include cohesive devices (X5) such as because, as, but, however, for example, like, and, in addition etc. To get a good grade in this part your grammar and vocabulary need to be accurate, appropriate and easy to understand.

      Communicative achievement

    They are looking at communication of ideas; it must be clear, relevant to the question and the target reader, use good simple language with some complex grammar.

    Structure of an article:

    Separate each part into a separate paragraph.

    Beginning:

    Engage the reader and make them want to read more, you can begin with a question or a general opinion

    Middle:

    State your main points and relate them to personal experiences and opinions

    Ending:

    Summarize your main points but make an overall point to make the reader think they have learned something from reading the article

    Suggested grammar structures:

    Impersonal passive: It is said that HBO make the best movies in the world.

    Modal verbs: It might be a good idea to take your time.

    Conditionals: If I were you, I would watch it at the cinema.

    Relative clauses: I know someone who lives in that area.

    Wish: I wish I could eat chocolate every day.

    You see this post on an English language website

    Write an article about these questions. The best articles will be published on the site.

There is nothing like looking forward to getting home and reading a book that you are into. It helps you unwind, improve your imagination and it can even help you to learn a foreign language.

Nếu bạn dành toàn bộ thời gian để ngồi mò từng đoạn thì bạn sẽ vẫn ra được đoạn cần tìm, nhưng như vậy sẽ mất thời gian nhiều hơn và sau khi hoàn thành đoạn văn bạn lại phải ngồi đọc lại nội dung một lần nữa cho các câu hỏi còn lại trong bài. Nên cách tối ưu nhất đó chính là làm các câu hỏi dạng khác trước và tóm tắt nội dung chính của từng đoạn văn bằng 2, 3 chữ bên ngoài lề để các bạn dễ xác định phần cần tìm khi làm đoạn văn summary.

    Bước 2: Cần lưu ý rằng, đây là dạng câu hỏi dùng để phân loại điểm, nên việc dùng scan và skim sẽ chỉ làm bạn tốn thêm thời gian mà chưa chắc tìm được câu trả lời đúng. Ví dụ: Nếu sử dụng scan và skim trong ví dụ ở bước 3, các bạn sẽ rất dễ bị câu mở đầu của đoạn summary và các synonyms trong đoạn summary đánh lừa. Nên để nhận biết được đúng đoạn văn nào trong bài đọc chính match với nội dung đoạn tóm tắt, hãy dành thời gian đọc thật kỹ và nắm ý chính của đoạn tóm tắt.

    Bước 3: Xác định xem các từ cần điền ở dạng nào, verb, adj, noun, etc.

Paper is also biodegradable, so it does not pose as much threat to the environment when it is discarded. While 45 out of every 100 tonnes of wood fibre used to make paper in Australia comes from waste paper, the rest comes directly from virgin fibre from forests and plantations. By world standards this is a good performance since the world-wide average is 33 per cent waste paper. Governments have encouraged waste paper collection and sorting schemes and at the same time, the paper industry has responded by developing new recycling technologies that have paved the way for even greater utilization of used fibre. As a result, industry’s use of recycled fibres is expected to increase at twice the rate of virgin fibre over the coming years.

    Bước 5: Dò đoạn văn summary theo nội dung đoạn văn trong bài đọc chính và xác định từ cần điền. Nên nhớ, đoạn văn summary chỉ tóm tắt lại các ý chính và lượt bỏ các ý không cần thiết, nên khi dò đoạn văn để tìm từ cần điền phải dò theo nội dung và dựa vào dạng từ cần điền (đã xác định ở bước 3) đề tìm từ cần điền. Theo đó ta có:

    Already, waste paper constitutes 70% of paper used for packaging and a dvances in the technology required to remove ink from the paper have allowed a higher recycled content in newsprint and writing paper. To achieve the benefits of recycling, the community must also contribute. We need to accept a change in the quality of paper products; for example stationery may be less white and of a rougher texture. There also needs to be support from the community for waste paper collection programs. Not only do we need to make the paper available to collectors but it also needs to be separated into different types and sorted from contaminants such as staples, paperclips, string and other miscellaneous items.
